Obituary for Margaret Rose "Peggy" Reed (Colomb)

Margaret “Peggy” Reed (Colomb)

Peggy, 77 years old, passed away peacefully on June 8, 2022 after complications from a stroke.

Peggy is the daughter of Anthony Colomb and Bernice Fields. She was born in Biddeford, Maine; grew up in Saco graduating from Thornton Academy in the class of 1962. She moved to Boston and spent her career working for John Hancock Insurance Company in downtown Boston.

Peggy is predeceased by her husband, Herschel (Herbie) Reed to whom she was married to for 52 years. After her husband’s unexpected death in 2020 she moved back to Maine to be closer to family where she lived with her niece, Penny Colomb in Alfred.

Peggy was as strong as they come. She was generous, caring, empathetic and accepting of others. She suffered her first stroke at the young age of 47. While it precluded her from continuing her career, she remained active volunteering at the Whidden Hospital in Everett, Massachusetts for many years. She persevered through countless surgeries and always remained optimistic; always more concerned about others than herself.

Although she and her husband did not have children of their own, they had a close and special relationship with their niece, Penny. Peggy and Penny were the best of friends and shared many travels and adventures including to the Grand Canyon, Las Vegas, Oklahoma, Texas, Niagara Falls, Prince Edward Island, New Brunswick, Nashville & Memphis Tennessee and their biggest trip to Alaska (Fairbanks, Denali National Park, Anchorage, followed by an Alaskan Cruise from Seward to Vancouver).

Travel was only one of Peggy’s passions. She enjoyed word puzzles of all kinds, crossword, cryptograms, logic puzzles, etc. She and her niece often had long ongoing Scrabble tournaments. With encouragement she embraced technology and became hooked on several word-type games on her tablet and cellphone. She loved animals, especially cats. She loved to read mystery, romance and crime novels. Peggy served as the family tour guide and spent more than 40 years leading and guiding family and friends on Boston’s Freedom Trail and many other sites of interest.

Peggy had a very special group of friends at the Everett Senior Center and at local restaurant, Tasty Garden. She loved her daily outing to the Armory. She went on many day trips, with casino’s being one of her favorite destinations (she was quite lucky). It was especially hard leaving these friends behind when she moved back to Maine not getting to have a real good-bye because of COVID-19. She missed that daily outing that COVID robbed her of and missed these friends dearly.

Peggy is survived by her brothers John Colomb of LaFeria, Texas, Owen Colomb of Wiscasset, Maine and Keith Colomb of Colebrook, NH and sister Shirley Wells of Westbrook Maine. In addition to her niece, Penny Colomb, she is also survived by 24 nieces/nephews.

At Peggy’s request there will be no memorial service.
