Condolence: My heart goes out to you and your family on the sudden loss of John. I have been to the orphanage in ShenYang two times in the past, the last being in 2006 where I met a very adorable little girl named MingGe. She quickly stole my heart and I was so happy to hear she was adopted by such a loving family. I still stay in contact with Migyeong and Elaine. Praise our forever faithful Heavenly Father who is always with us - He will provide for you daily. You are in my prayers, Amber Kinner (Casper, Wyoming)

Condolence: Danelle,Jack & MingGe, We are so sadden by the heartbreaking news. John will be in our hearts and memories. I still remembered that day about 10 years ago, he said first hello to me in Chinese outside of Toddle Inn; I still remember anecdotes he shared with us each time he came back from his summer trip to rural areas in China, where he volunteered to teach; How could we also forget the annual ritual that we had to bring our little kids together, walking down Kennebunk main street for trick or treat! John, you will be greatly missed, may God bless your soul in eternity!

Condolence: I still can’t believe the news of John’s passing. Although I knew John in elementary and high school I was blessed to be asked to be his photographer at Danelle and his wedding. Even after I moved to CO I enjoyed having a few play dates with our children. My fondest memories of John are of us driving around in the red station wagon and watching him work on the Sunny W showing me how to deep sea fish, something he was very good at. I was so impressed that John would make Danelle’s lunches for her everyday and admired their loving and respectful relationship. I love reading all of the stories from his students and how he impacted their lives. I feel so blessed to have had John in my life- he was very special. To Mr. and Mrs. Daley, Jill, Jamie and Jennifer I am so sorry you have lost John. Know that he is with God and that He may comfort you during your time of sorrow. Danelle, Jack and MingGe my heart goes out to you and will hold you in my prayers.

Condolence: To the Daley family, I’m so sorry for your loss. Mr. Daley encouraged every student to reach their full potential. He doubted nobody and offered advice and guidance to all. He was a friendly face in a place that can feel stressful and overwhelming. At the end of the week, when leaving his class I can remember him saying, “Be safe this weekend!” It was these simple gestures that made his students feel like there was somebody at Kennebunk High School looking out for them. He attended my graduation party, and presented me with a red envelope. The red envelope is often given at social or family gatherings in Chinese culture and symbolizes good luck. He went above and beyond to show students that he believed in them. Mr.Daley was an extraordinary teacher and a great man, and will be missed by all who came to know him.

Condolence: Danelle and family I am so sorry for your loss. John was always so friendly and engaging no matter where I ran into him. He always asked how Sierra was doing and told me how much he enjoyed having her in class. When it came time to write college reference letters Sierra asked him and he replied, "I would be honored." There are many memories of the family coming trick or treating thru our neighborhood. His little grin evertime I saw him. He was a good man, we will miss him deeply. Sending thoughts and prayers. Love the Tartre family

Condolence: I met Mr. Daley when I was an exchange student at KHS and in his “American History” class. It was great fun to discuss with him the different views on history Americans and Europeans have. We kept in touch over the years and we just ran into each other this past summer and he asked me “Hey are you finally studying history now?” And I told him that I was not. But I changed my mind this year and I was just about to send him an e-mail about it when the news reached me about him. I will miss him very much and it is sad to be in Germany and not being able to say a real “good bye”. In my memory he will always be my favourite American history teacher and friend.

Condolence: I hadn't seen John in years, but we spent considerable time together as high school friends. It is easy for me to understand the warm loving remarks left by so many here. John hadn't changed a bit. Sympathetic, funny, caring, and an advocate for those in need, John was a wonderful man. My heart aches for his family. Rest in peace, my friend. "The Spokes" forever.

Condolence: My son, Austin was blessed to have "Mr.Daley" for two classes this year, Financial Literacy and History. He was a very gifted teacher who really connected with his students, and this was especially true for Austin! Austin deals with social anxiety on a regular basis and has been very reluctant to participate in his classes. This changed completely with encouragement from Mr. Daley. He took Austin under his wing. In his class, Austin felt safe and accepted. He started to raise his hand to participate in discussions and debates. He credits Mr. Daley with helping him to find a new confidence! Austin has pledged to work hard to succeed in his honor! We are heartbroken for you, your family and all at K.H.S. for the loss of this wonderful man.

Condolence: John was a special person. I always enjoyed collaborating with him at school as he was always so flexible and understanding. He touched the lives of students who really needed an advocate in a teacher. He made learning fun for the students he served and will be sadly missed by the students and faculty at KHS who were fortunate enough to call him teacher or friend. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family. John will be missed but his legacy will live on in the lives of the students and friends he touched.

Condolence: Fourteen years ago on my first day working at the high school John greeted me with an outstretched hand and a big grin on his face and I knew I had just made a new friend. Over the years I came to realize how much John truly loved his wife, kids, school, students, friends, and life - and would do anything for all of them. He will be greatly missed by all those whose lives he touched.

Condolence: I was so fortunate to spend lots of time with John and his family throughout my teenage years. John's fun loving nature was infectious. I adored him and always wished he was my big brother! The tributes from his students and colleagues make it so apparent he carried his good, caring, genuine nature into his role as a teacher. To Danelle, Jack, MingGe, Mr. & Mrs. Daley, Jamie, Jen and Jill - I am so sorry for your heartache and loss. Much love to you all.

Condolence: When I first started at KHS as as brand new teacher 16 years ago, John was among the first of my colleagues to befriend me. We ate lunch together with the cool guys of maintenance crew in the cafe. Once or twice we may have illegally left campus in his big old yellow pick up to go grab a sandwich in town. He was real, genuine, and down to Earth. What you saw is what you got right down to the paint spatters on his Crocs, and that was the beautiful thing about John. He taught me that the relationship teachers forge with students transcends curriculum, labels and test scores, that being authentic and grounded was more important than those who hold themselves in high regard. You have my respect, Mr. Daley. Thank you for being the needed champion of the underdog.

Condolence: I was absolutely crushed to hear of the loss of Mr Daley. Those of us who were lucky enough to know him will remember his kindness, compassion, and sense of humor. He was a wonderful human being and undoubtedly made it on hundreds of favorite teacher lists. I specifically remember a conversation I had with him about 15 years ago after babysitting for Jack. His eyes lit up when we talked about his son, and he lovingly referred to Jack as “my boy”. He was one heck of a teacher, but I believe his greatest role was Dad. Danelle, Jack and MingGe, I am so incredibly sorry for your loss and will continue to keep you all in my prayers.

Condolence: I hated high school. I wasn't connected to the learning, I thought it was a waste of time, the social aspect of it all drove me crazy and I subsequently dropped out towards the end of my junior year. But a few teachers held onto me and didn't let me get too far away. Mr. Daley was one of them. Even though I was a 16 year old headache, a few teachers kept reaching out to me when I stopped going. In about eight months, they worked out a way where I could get my diploma through getting credits outside of returning to high school. It was a huge turning point in my life, one that allowed me to graduate high school, go to college and even work with kids in schools today. I really don't think I would be where I am in my life without them. Mr. Daley was one of those teachers and I found out about his death while working on getting my teaching credentials in order earlier today. I remembered this one time he saw me walking through the snow while riding his snowmobile. He swung by on his snowmobile and instead of making some remark about me not being in school that much lately, he looked right at me, smiled wide and went, "wanna drive it?" I hopped on and we raced through the snow for what felt like forever. I laughed and I remember how easy it was to talk to him- we didn't really have to say anything at all it was just cool. At the end of the ride he told me not to get into too much trouble and miss too much school because he missed having a rabble-rouser in his class. I told him I would come back if I could sit on the window ledge instead of a desk. He said, "that's what everyone does anyway," laughed, and drove off. Teachers like Mrs Daley changed my life. I am so sad he's gone. The care and attention that he gave me and everyone else in that school shaped us into the people we are today. Rest in Power Mr. Daley, we love you.

Condolence: What pain and grief of losing one of my "little" friends in death. I have the fondest of memories of playing with matchbox cars in the garden and running around outside the house playing "army." Not to mention the many walks to Hoberts to buy baseball cards and Big Buddy gum to stuff in our mouths. My deepest sympathy to Mr. and Mrs. Daley, Jamie, Jill, Jennifer, and all those who came to know John.

Condolence From: Andy Young
Condolence: John engaged every young person who walked into his classroom, and met them where they were. The amount of knowledge he shared with his students was impressive, but the significance of that pales by comparison to the number (and quality) of relationships he forged with them. John was a genuinely good person who truly cared about others. His friends and students are richer for having known him, and his colleagues will miss him nearly as much as they'll treasure having had the opportunity to interact with (and learn from) him. John's kindness and innate decency insure that his legacy will reverberate for generations.

Condolence: Danielle, I have such fond memories of your family. The year that I had your son Jack in kindergarten I left for Texas to pick up my adopted son, Jackson. Over the years I saw you and John and was always happy to share memories of our children. It was so nice this past fall as we watched our daughters play field hockey on opposing teams and once again get caught up on our children. You are all in my prayers.

Condolence: John was a great ally and advocate for the students at KHS who didn't always love school...he was there for them. Kids don't care how much you know until they know how much you care...and they knew he cared. I will miss his always smiling face in the hallways and his willingness to share a story and to listen to one of yours. He will be sorely missed by our community. We hold his family in our hearts and thoughts. Peace to all, Rachel Phipps

Condolence From: Tim & Deb Tower
Condolence: Danelle, Jack & MingGe Rose. Please accept our deep condolences for such a terrible loss of such a wonderful person at such a young age. We are deeply saddened that we will never see JD again. We have many wonderful memories of JD running the Bunny Clark. It was hard enough to see him walk away to his vocation then. I doubt that there is ever a time in a week where I (Tim) don't think of JD and of the great times and the work he did for our patrons. It was fitting that he leave the boats and move on to teaching where the love of the people he worked with must have shown through. He will be sorely as much or more than any of the other wonderful, caring, honest and kind people of our past. We wish you the best of luck in coping with your loss.
