Obituary for Carl W. "Bill" Goodwin

Wells Branch, Maine

On Friday, April 16, 2021, Carl W. (Bill) Goodwin of Wells Branch, Maine,
loving husband and father of seven, passed away at the age of 91 at the Huntington Common in Kennebunk, Maine.

Carl was born at the family farm in Wells Branch on January 1, 1930, to
parents Carl and Clara (Wightman) Goodwin. Carl attended the Division 16
one-room schoolhouse in Wells Branch; Wells High School; and the
University of Maine in Orono, from which he graduated with a Bachelor’s
degree in mechanical engineering.

On March 26, 1953, Carl married Joan Mary Nadeau of Kennebunk, Maine.
Carl and Joan moved to New Jersey and Carl worked as an engineer for
the Worthington Corporation in Harrison.

Upon the death of his father, Carl and Joan moved back to the family farm
in 1954. There, Carl took over and expanded the family lumber and wood
business.

Carl was a member of the Wells Branch Fire Association and Wells Branch
Community League for many years, he served as a member of the Wells
Planning Board.

Carl and Joan started wintering in the St. Cloud, Florida, area in 1982,
where he enjoyed playing tennis. He recently returned home full time to the
family farm, now housing the 11th generation of Goodwins.

Carl enjoyed singing, homemade pies, chicken barbeques, Western films,
and telling stories that got more fantastic as the years went by.


Carl’s final days were spent at Huntington Common in Kennebunk. Carl’s
family would like to thank the staff, especially Lisa and Ashley, for their
kindness while he was in their care.

Carl was predeceased by his parents and his son Alan died in 1957.

Carl is survived by wife of 68 years, Joan and six of their seven children and their
spouses, Dwight Goodwin, Lynn and David Schmidt, Jeffrey and Leisa
Goodwin, Julie and Larry Downing, Christopher Goodwin, and Caroline and
Brian Lane. He has nine surviving grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Carl will be laid to rest in the family plot at Hope Cemetery in Kennebunk,
Maine.
