Douglas Hanscom Mathews, 91, of North Berwick, Maine died peacefully at home on Saturday,
November 5th, 2022.
Doug was born on December 25, 1930 to Herbert Chester and Lila Mathews.
Doug started his career working for P.R Boston in 1948 at the age of 16. He continued to work for the company as it transitioned through six different names and ownerships including Tilcon-Warren, most recently known as Pike Industries. Doug was employed in the position of foreman for 22 years until retirement. He was fondly referred to as “Tar Baby” by his co-workers which followed him even after retirement as his CB radio handle. He served as a volunteer firefighter with the William Hill Fire Department in North Berwick, where he resided with his family who owned and operated the “Mathews Dairy Farm” with the help of his eight children.
Douglas is predeceased by his wife of 32 years, Helen Gray Mathews (1985), his parents Herbert Chester and Lila Mathews and siblings, Edith Hall, Coralie Ross, Althea Cole, Bernard Mathews, and Carleton Mathews.
Doug is survived by daughter, Sylvia (Mathews) Rowe and husband Linwood of Wells, Maine, grandson Jason Rowe and great granddaughter Jillian Rowe of Eliot, Maine; son, Roger Mathews and wife Patricia of Sanford, Maine; grandson Douglas Mathews of Long Island, New York; granddaughter Mary Helen Mathews) Savage and husband Justin of North Berwick, Maine, great grandchildren Katrina, Cameron, Curtis, Carter, Caden, Karly, Cody, and Carson; son, Kenneth Mathews and wife Lori-Lee of Sanbornville, NH, granddaughter Beth Ballard and husband Jason of Acton, Maine, great grandchildren Ashlynne Hichens, Brynnely Hichens, Jack Ballard and Ava Ballard; granddaughter Kerrie (Mathews) Provencher and husband Matthew of North Berwick, Maine; great grandchildren Maison Mathews, Kenleigh Provencher, Miles Provencher, Kadence Provencher; granddaughter Mariah Akers and husband James of Sanbornville, NH, great grandchildren Cooper and Preston Akers; granddaughter Breanna Moulton and Jake Shapleigh of North Berwick, great grandchildren Finn-Lee and Harper Shapleigh; daughter, Bonnie (Mathews) Lamie and husband Richard of Wells, Maine; grandsons John and James; granddaughter Lisa Fox and husband Mike of Minnesota, great granddaughters Brianna Goenner, Samantha and Husband Chris Fox, great grandson
Cody and wife Jodi Fox and great great grandson Tim, and great grandson Dylan Fox; daughter, Cindy (Mathews) Leeman and husband Timothy of North Berwick, Maine, grandchildren; Steve Shaw, Andrew Goodrich, and Alexis Goodrich of Gonic, NH; son, George Mathews and wife Karen (Hett) Mathews of North Berwick; Grandson, James Hargis and wife Jocelyn of York, Maine, great grandchildren Ellis and Sunny; granddaughter Cathryn Mathews of North Berwick, Maine and wife Brianne Ryan; granddaughter Hannah
(Mathews) Young of Gray, Maine and husband Christopher; daughter, Della (Mathews) Maher and husband Dennis of Waterboro, Maine; grandchildren Lance and Mikayla; daughter, Dawn (Mathews) Moulton and husband Dale of Jonesboro, Arkansas; granddaughters Abigail Moulton-Wozniak and husband Stephen, Ashley Moulton and Mitchell Schultz of Buffalo, New York. He is also survived by many nephews and nieces.
Friends may call from 1-3pm on Tuesday, November 15, 2022 at Bibber Memorial Chapel, 111 Chapel Road, Wells, ME, where a funeral service will be held at 3pm. Reception to follow at the Wells - Ogunquit Senior Center, 300 Post Road, Wells, Maine.
