Obituary for Dr. John Raymond Phythyon

Dr. John Raymond Phythyon, Ph.D., 79, a native of Dayton, OH and resident of Kennebunk, ME, died February 11, 2022.

John earned his Bachelor of Science degree at Wake Forest University, his Master of Science degree from the Ohio State University, and Doctorate from Bowling Green State University. He spent the majority of his academic career at St. Norbert College. The camaraderie of his colleagues and students was instrumental in the pleasure he found in teaching. His preferred activity was mentoring students in research methodology and supporting their success. He retired as Professor Emeritus in 2007 after more than 30 years of teaching. After retiring to Maine, John returned to teaching as an adjunct professor at both Southern Maine Community College and the University of New England.

John was an ardent chess enthusiast, successfully competing in local, state, and national tournaments including, winning the West Virginia State Chess Championship in 1972, and served on the board of the Wisconsin Chess Association. He spent many hours devoted to studying chess, right up to the time of his passing. His love of the game and participation in the chess community created some of his most cherished friendships throughout his life.

A passionate fan of Ohio State football and the Cincinnati Reds, John taught his children to root for the Scarlet-and-Gray and the Big Red Machine, despite raising them in Wisconsin. John enjoyed playing in multiple softball and golf leagues throughout his life, affording him many hours of enjoyment with good friends.

John was preceded in death by his parents Harry and Hazel (Thompson) Phythyon. He is survived by his wife Nancy (Stansfield) Phythyon; his children – John Phythyon, Jr. of Columbus, OH, and David Phythyon and his partner Barbara Ascher of Madison, WI; his granddaughter Onna Phythyon; his sister Judith Burton and husband George of Corona, CA; and several nieces and nephews.
