Obituary for Dr. Robert W. McManus

Robert W. McManus, 77 years, of Wells, ME, passed away on September 12, 2022, after a brief illness.

Bob was born in Salem, MA on January 30, 1945, to Francis and Constance (Guay) McManus. He attended St. John’s Prep in Danvers, MA and graduated from Masconomet Regional High School in Boxford, MA. He received his bachelor of arts degree from Suffolk University and his master’s degree from Northeastern Universities, both in Boston, MA. He continued his education at Columbia University in New York City, receiving his doctorate in Psychology. Bob’s career began at Somers Trust Psychological in North Andover, MA, where he worked for many years. He then went on to work as a therapist at Harborside Counseling in Newburyport, MA, retiring in 2008. As part of his professional achievements, he was a member of the American Academy of Psychotherapists, the Society for Family Therapy and Research, and the Massachusetts Association of Guardians ad Litem. He found great fulfillment and touched many lives throughout his career.

During his lifetime, Bob enjoyed being a ‘Gentleman Farmer’ in Eliot, ME, caring for a menagerie of creatures great and small. He later lived the lake life in Abbot, ME on Piper Pond exploring the ATV and snowmobile trails in winter and puttering about on his pontoon boat with family and friends in the summer months.

Bob’s true passion was sailing, and he loved his time on the ocean. When not “messing about in boats,” he could be found in his workshop tinkering, fixing and working on any number of projects. Later in life he found much enjoyment in clock repair and spending time with family and friends.

He was a member of the Corinthian Yacht Club in Marblehead, MA, and the Pepperell Cove Yacht Club in Kittery Point, ME.

He was predeceased by his parents, Francis and Constance McManus, and his sisters, Gay Bonello and Michele McManus.

Robert is survived by his beloved wife, Mary; his daughter, Pamela Walker of New Mexico and her partner Mark Arsenault; his daughter, Kerry Brown of Wentworth, NH and her husband Richard; his son, Michael McManus of Eliot, ME and his wife, Bekki; his daughter, Kate Hollenkamp of Saco, ME and her husband, James; his grandchildren, Elizabeth, Jack, Ronan, Finn, Chelsey, and Richie; his two great-grandchildren, Nicholas and Elliott; his sister Jan McManus of Stratham, NH; his brother, William McManus of Scottsdale, AZ and his husband David Nelson; his brother, Sean McManus of Center Ossipee, NH and his wife Julie; and several nieces and nephews.

“All this he saw, for one moment breathless and intense, vivid on the morning sky; and still, as he looked, he lived; and still, as he lived, he wondered.” - Kenneth Grahame, The Wind in the Willows

A celebration of life will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Robert’s honor may be made to Gosnell Memorial Hospice House
