Obituary for Hope Moody Shelley (Moody)

Hope M. Shelley, age 90, of Wells, ME, passed away on December 7, 2023, in Wells. She was born on June 21, 1933, in York, Maine, to the late Wesley Moody and Doris (Bourne) Moody.

Hope was involved in the Wells Historic Preservation Commission in the 1970''s and became a member of the Historical Society in 1978. She served as its President from 1978 to 1981 and again in the 1990''s. Hope became the Wells Town Historian in 1992.

Hope wrote many historical articles that have been published in local newspapers and she started the "Waves and Furrows" newsletter. She also developed and co-authored the "Wandering Through Wells" series and was heavily involved in coordination of the town''s 350th celebration in 2003. Hope wrote several books including: "Wells", "Beaches of Wells", The Congregational Way at Wells: A History of the Congregational Church", "My Name is Wells, I am the Town", and "Vital Records of Wells Maine 1619-1950". Hope also transcribed the 18th century journal of John Littlefield, an early settler, and undertook the organization and documentation of 200-plus private cemeteries in Wells.

Hope devoted more than 40 years to volunteerism in the town and was recognized as the 2018 Wells Volunteer of the Year. Growing up locally, Hope attended Wells schools from the first grade through high school, graduating in 1952. During high school. She marched in the band, played basketball, and was the Valedictorian of her class. After school, Hope enjoyed a career in nursing and also served as school nurse in Maine SAD #57, Brentwood School System (NH) and Wells schools.

Hope''s roots are deep in the town of Wells. It''s where she grew up and it''s where she and her late husband, Robert F. Shelley, raised their three children. When Hope was not involved in the town, she found enjoyment in gardening and reading.

Hope is survived by her son David Shelley and his wife, Connie of Wells, her granddaughter Dianah Shelley (Samuel Hostetter) and great-grandson Bennett David Hostetter, her granddaughter Katrina Wiggin (Andrew), of Wells, her son Brad Shelley and his wife, Betsy of Wells, her grandsons Blake Shelley of Gorham, Maine, Travis Shelley of Foxboro, Mass, and Drew Shelley of Nashua, NH, her step-granddaughters Deanna Gamache of Wells and Jackie Sausville (Jake) of Portsmouth, NH, her daughter Leigh Anne Voelkner (Kent) of Duluth, MN, her granddaughter Samantha Zehr, and great-granddaughters Lucy Hope and Leia Emilie Zehr of Detroit Lakes, MN, and grandson Stephen Voelkner of Valley City, ND.

Hope was preceded in death by her husband Robert F. Shelley and son-in-law Kent S. Voelkner.

Hope''s memorial service will be held at 11 am on Friday, December 15 at the Congregational Church of Wells, 1695 Post Rd. Wells, Maine. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to The Historical Society of Wells and Ogunquit.
