Obituary for Josephine E. Hunt (Shorey)

Josephine Esther Shorey Hunt, 67 years, a resident of Kennebunkport, died October 2, 2022 after a period of declining health, surrounded by her family.
She was born on July 12, 1955, in Biddeford, Maine, the daughter of William and Alice (Bragdon) Shorey and grew up in Arundel and Kennebunkport. She attended Kennebunk Schools and finished high school in New Hampshire.
Josephine worked for the Maine Department of Transportation for more than 20 years. She loved her work and all the different challenges that it brought to her life. From plowing snow to paving a large highway, Josephine always loved the challenge of helping others through her work.
Josephine’s number one passion was her Geriatric Farm. Josephine loved the struggle that comes with keeping and maintaining a farm full of animals that most had given up on due to their age or medical condition. It did not matter if it was a stray cat, lost sheep, or even an elderly pony, Josephine would welcome it and she would take care of it, no questions asked. This love for animals she shared with everyone that she met, and a lot of times those people would be the adults and kids of the 4-H. She would have groups over to show them how to milk goats, sheer sheep and even how to walk your sheep when you are showing them at the fair.
Josephine was preceded by the death of her parents, Alice (Bragdon) Shorey and William Shorey as well as her sister Erica Brown and brother, Timothy Shorey. The biggest loss to Josephine was the death of her husband earlier this year. John “Jack” Hunt was the love of her life and even in her final days all she could talk about was seeing Jack again.
She is survived by her 3 children, her daughter Margaret Mariello and her spouse Lori who reside in Florida, her son Richard Mariello and his wife Lynn who reside in Biddeford, and her daughter Nicole Hutchins and her husband Michael from Kennebunk Maine. She is also survived by 13 grandchildren who have started to explore the world and find their passions on how they can help out their communities for the better. Because of her large family Josephine is also survived by 12 great grandchildren who were all a large blessing to her.
Visiting hours will be held from 1-3 pm on Tuesday, October 11, 2022 at Bibber Memorial Chapel, 67 Summer Street, Kennebunk, ME, where a Memorial Service will follow at 3pm.
The family would like any donations to go towards the Animal Welfare Society, PO Box 43, West Kennebunk, ME 04094, to respect their mothers love and passion for lost animals.
