Obituary for Lorraine E. Dill (Nadeau)

Lorraine Dill died November 19th, 2019 at the age of 90, surrounded by her loving family in her home. Lorraine was born on January 11,1929 in Dover, NH and moved to Kennebunk, ME in January of 1940. She spent most of her childhood in Kennebunk, living in the family home on Fletcher Street with her parents and four siblings. As a senior in high school she moved to Bisbee, Arizona with her Aunt Teena and Uncle James to help them take care of their children. She graduated from Bisbee High School in 1947, though she always proudly considered herself an alumnus of Kennebunk High School and attended alumni gatherings for many years. Lorraine became a mother in 1956, and went on to raise four wonderful children, Brian, Susan, John and Carol in Kennebunk. She became a single mother early on, and supported her young family by owning and operating the Smart Set Beauty Salon. Centrally located off of Main and Garden Streets in Kennebunk, Smart Set was a place for perms and haircuts, town gossip, cheese, crackers, donuts, date nut bread and her infamous spiked punch for the holidays. Lorraine operated the salon for more than 50 years, and many of her loyal customers were also her close friends. Lorraine and her mother, Sitti Ma, hosted Sunday dinner for their family every week, which has continued to be a cherished tradition.

In 1985 she became a grandmother, and has lovingly been called “Sitti” (Lebanese for grandmother) by her six grandchildren ever since. When Lorraine retired from hairdressing in 2000, she enjoyed caring for her grandchildren after school, going for drives around the beach in her prized Sebring convertible, watching old movies, calling or visiting with her friends, and of course cooking for her family. Food was an integral part of her life, and she loved to cook Lebanese favorites that she had learned from her mother, like kibbe, grape leaves from her own vine, and of course, a tremendous amount of Kaik, which she loved to share with her family during the Easter season. Even as her mobility declined, she always figured out a way to maneuver around her kitchen and make lunch if someone stopped by, or to make an eggplant parmesan just because she wanted to.

Lorraine’s family was her world; it gave her unending joy to watch her children and grandchildren grow up, and she was overjoyed and so proud of her continuously growing family. In 2018, she became a great grandmother, and was eagerly awaiting the arrival of her second great grandchild in January. Her family will miss her dearly, and is grateful for the many wonderful and memorable years they were able to share with her.

Lorraine was predeceased by her parents, Joseph and Nazira (Dowaliby) Nadeau; her siblings Juliette Miller, James Nadeau, Edmund Nadeau, and Frederick (Sonny) Nadeau; her sister in-law and close friend, Metta Nadeau; and close friend, Norma LaPierre.

Lorraine is survived by her children, Brian Dill, Susan Brunelle and husband Marc Brunelle, John Dill, Carol Shorey and husband Bill Shorey; her grandchildren, Joey Brunelle, Jessica Lirette (Ryan), Stephen Shorey (Ellen), Katie Shorey-Coghlan (Tom), Haley Chase (Zack) and Jedd Dill; her great grandchild, Abigail Lirette. In addition, many cousins, nieces and nephews and her dear sister-in-law, Jackie Nadeau, as well as her close friend, Natalie Zaleski.
