Obituary for Richard Carl Broadbent

Richard Carl Broadbent of York, Maine passed away at his home October 10, 2023 surrounded by his family after a courageous battle with cancer. He was 80.

Richard was born in Sanford, Maine, on November 10, 1942 to Carlton and Jerrine (Vennell) Broadbent. He was raised primarily in Springvale along with his brother Stephen. He attended Sanford High School where he graduated with honors. In receiving a scholarship from the Springvale Teachers Association, he applied and was accepted to Gorham State Teachers College. He became the first in his family to attend college, making his parents extremely proud. He graduated with honors in 1965 with a BS in Education and later receiving his Masters Degree.

He met his soulmate and love of his life Barbara. They married June 18,1967, and moved to York, Me where they raised their 3 children.

Richard taught for 19 years at Frisbee Jr. High School in Kittery, Maine. He taught science and other subjects. He thoroughly loved the staff and students and they loved him.

After retiring, Richard and Barbara focused their time on running their Antique and Gift Shop the Little Red Hen in York, Me. This shop was a staple in York for many years forming many friendships with customers over the years.

Over the years, Richard and Barbara had the opportunity to travel and spend time in their home away from home, Fort Myers, FL. With adventures to Alaska, Disney, Vegas, Fort Myers, and bus trips to Foxwoods, they enjoyed life to the fullest.

Richard was diagnosed with stage four esophageal cancer in 2017 and began a journey of treatment at Wentworth Douglas Cancer Center in Dover, NH. The wonderful doctors and nurses he had over the years became family to both him and Barbara. His quality of life over the past 6 years was enriched by the staff in both the Portsmouth and Dover locations. Most recently, he was supported and cared for by his loving hospice staff from Cornerstone VNA.

Richard is predeceased by parents, Carlton and Jerrine, his brother Stephen, his dear grandmother, Alice Vennell and his always smiling daughter, Allison Beahm.

He is survived by: his loving wife of 56 years, Barbara; daughter, Sarah Gerbino and husband, Peter of York, ME; son, William Broadbent and his wife, Jess of Wells, ME; son-in-law, Ray Beahm of Gorham, ME; four grandchildren, Ashlea Gerbino, Doug Beahm, Matt Beahm, and Abigail Gerbino. He was their Papa and he so loved them.

Visitation will be held from 1:00 PM – 3:00 PM on Saturday, October 14, 2023 at Bibber Memorial Chapel, 111 Chapel Rd., Wells, ME.

Amy’s Treat benefits the patients of the Seacoast Cancer Center in New Hampshire. They are dedicated to providing solutions to the day-to-day difficulties of living with cancer. Richard was known to bring “treats” to his nursing team.
Richard wrote several copies of his obituary during his time on Hospice, in each copy, he ended with this saying:
