Obituary for Sherwin Cathcart Day

Sherwin Cathcart Day, 92, a well-known musician and resident of Kennebunk passed away Tuesday, January 4, 2022 at Gosnell Memorial Hospice House in Scarborough following a period of failing health.

Sherwin was born December 25, 1929 in New York, New York, the son of William and Frances (Breeden) Day, and is a graduate of the Browning School and Columbia University with a degree in Fine Arts.

He is a veteran of the US Army, serving stateside during the Korean war.

Upon returning to New York, Sherwin began his career in merchandising with Bloomingdales, holding various sales and managerial positions for 29 years.

Sherwin, his wife Christie and their 3 children moved to Kennebunk, ME in 1987 where Sherwin went on to open his own music studio, teaching many in the area piano and composition. He performed through River Tree Arts, The Colony Hotel and Ogunquit Performing Arts, among many other venues. He was most proud of his “piano concerto in C minor” which was performed by the River Tree Arts Chamber Ensemble, and a piano composition for Danforth Gallery in 1989 called “Images of Piano.

Active in the community, Sherwin was a teacher at River Tree Arts, former member of the Wells Rotary Club and was church organist for several local churches, most recently as music director with the Cornerstone United Methodist Church in Saco, ME for over 16 years until his retirement in December of 2019.

Sherwin is survived by his wife Christie Day of Kennebunk; two sons, William Cathcart Day of South Portland, John Ormsby Day, and a daughter Amanda Christie Day, both of Portland; three grandchildren; Jared Day, Finn Jorgensen and Liam Jorgensen, and several nieces and nephews.

A private interment service will be held for the family, and a musical celebration of Sherwin’s life will be held in the spring and announced by Bibber Memorial Chapel.
