Obituary for William H. "Bill" Bolinder

William Howard Bolinder, 79 of Naples, FL and Kennebunk, ME died peacefully on Thursday September 29, 2022 at the Gosnell Memorial Hospice House following a three and half year journey with leiomyosarcoma, a rare cancer of the soft tissue.
Born in Brockton MA, Bill received a B.S. in Business Administration from the University of Massachusetts, Dartmouth in 1965. Bill enjoyed a long and successful global career in Financial Services. His career began in underwriting at the Travelers Insurance Company in Hartford, CT. From 1978-1986, he was with Continental Insurance Company as executive vice president international and special markets in New York City. Bill joined Zurich-American Insurance Company in Schaumburg, IL in 1986 as Chief Operating Officer and became Chief Executive Officer in 1987. He was a member of the Group Management Board for Zurich Financial Services Group in Zurich, Switzerland from 1994-2002. From 2003-2006, he served as President, Chief Executive Officer and a director of Acadia Trust N.A., a subsidiary of Camden National Corporation in Maine.
He also served on the board of the American Insurance Association, American institute for Chartered Property Casualty Underwriting, Insurance Institute for Applied Ethics, Insurance Institute of America, Insurance Services Office, Inc. and the National Association of Independent Insurers. His later career included director roles at Genworth Financial, Endurance Specialty Holdings Ltd., and Quanta Capital Holding Ltd.
Outside of the financial services industry, Bill generously shared his time, expertise and resources with numerous organizations that were important to him including City of Hope, Edgcomb Tennis Club and the Precious Cargo Academy.
Bill met his wife of 22 years, Heather English, in Zurich, Switzerland. Together they enjoyed travelling, tennis, cycling and kayaking. Bill loved sports especially his beloved Boston teams but his favorite sporting events were those of his grandchildren. He spent many joyful hours in hockey rinks and at baseball fields. Bill’s love of warm weather made Naples, FL the ideal place for him to live. His church home was at Naples United Church of Christ in Naples, FL and St. Ann’s Episcopal Church in Kennebunkport in the summer months. Bill’s faith was an important influence on his life.
Bill was extremely proud of his 3 children William (Christina) of Randolph, NJ, Kimberly (Ray Yox) and Amy (Jochen Lorch) of Evanston, IL. He cherished his 10 grandchildren: William (Stephanie), Robert, Rose, Alexander (Kimberly), Mackenzie (Christopher), Devin (Matthew), David, Jonathan, Lillian, Martin and his two great-grandchildren Natalie Ann Bolinder and Rhys Alexander Owen.
Bill is also survived by his brother Thomas (Mary McCarthy) of Bourne, MA and Tom’s family. He is predeceased by his parents, Frances and Howard Bolinder.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday October 5 from 5-7 at Bibber Memorial Chapel, 67 Summer Street, Kennebunk, ME. A funeral service will be held on Thursday October 6 at 11:00 at Bibber Memorial Chapel, followed by a reception. Interment will be private at St. Ann’s Columbarium. A Celebration of Life will be held and available for livestreaming at a later date at Naples United Church of Christ, Naples, FL.
