As a friend who had the privilege to share in the lives of of this large and wonderful family, it often seemed to me that Gene and Nancy had built not just a family, but an empire. Growing up, I was at the Masteller house so often that Gene and Nancy probably felt they had another daughter, but they always made me feel welcome. While Gene didn’t often say much, he made sure to greet me, usually on his way out the door as he left for work. I remember how imposing yet kind - “bearlike” - he look standing in the doorway in his uniform. And, like so many others, I remember his perfectly timed sense of humor. Thank you for letting me into your family. God bless Gene and all of the Mastellers.

Peace!Peace! He is not dead, he doth not sleep,- he hath awakened from the dream of life; The Splendours of the firmament of time may be eclipsed, but are extinguished not; Like stars to their appointed height they climb and death is a low mist that cannot blot the brightness it may veil. With lofty thought lifts a young heart above it's mortal lair and love and life contend in it, for what shall be earthly doom, the dead live there and move like winds of light on dark and stormy air. The one remains, the many change and pass; Heavens light forever shines, Earth shadows fly; Life like a dome of many-coloured glass, stains the white radiance of eternity, until death tramples it to fragments.-Die if thou wouldst be with that which thou dost seek! Follow where all is fled!- Rome's azure sky. - Excerpts from "Adonais" by Percy Bysshe Shelly
