Obituary for Robert P. "Bob" Pons

Robert P. "Bob" Pons
KENNEBUNK Robert Paul Pons, 77, a resident of Kennebunk, formerly of Framingham, MA, died Sunday, February 5, 2017, just minutes after watching his New England Patriots make history, in the company of his loving wife.

Bob, as he was known to all, was born December 2, 1939 in Somerville, MA, the son of Augustine Paul and Ruth A Tobin Pons, and is a graduate of Brookline High School, where he was a standout three-sport athlete competing on the football, hockey and baseball teams. While a freshman of Brookline High, Bob made the National (under 14) hockey team and went on to win the US championship. The accolades continued when, as a senior, Bob was selected by the Boston Globe for its All-Scholastic Hockey Team.

Following high school, Bob went on to attend Kimball Union Preperatory School for a year playing hockey, and then moved on to Boston College where he played varsity hockey for two years along with a year of varsity baseball before he decided he needed to focus more attention on his studies. He then graduated from Boston College with a Bachelors and Master’s degree in economics.

Bob was employed as a claims adjuster with Crawford & Co. in Washington DC and subsequently joined GEICO Insurance Co. At this point in time while working and living in the nation's capital, Bob met the love of his life Mary Lee Johnson. Three years later they were married and as of Sunday had been married 47+ years.

After leaving GEICO, Bob worked for SSA (Social Security Administration) at their Baltimore headquarters for a number of years before being promoted to their Boston Federal Regional Office with the Department of HHS where he worked until retirement in 2002.

Robert was an avid sports enthusiast, following all the local sports teams, and sharing stories with his family of his own experiences playing multiple sports in the greater Boston area.

Survivors include his wife Mary Lee Pons and a son Greg Pons, both of Kennebunk, a daughter Caryn Ruth Pons and her husband Michael Appelbaum of Georgia, two sisters R. Marylyn Ford of Potomac MD, and Beverly Leckemby of Fairfield PA, and two grandsons Luke and Owen.

Visiting hours will be held 6-8 PM Thursday, February 9, 2017 at Bibber Memorial Chapel, 67 Summer St. Kennebunk. A funeral mass will be held 11AM Friday, February 10, 2017 at Holy Spirit Parish, St. Martha’s Church, 30 Portland Rd. Kennebunk.
