Obituary for Edith Morrison "Edie" Leonhard

Edith Morrison "Edie" Leonhard
Dateline – Wells, ME

Edith Morrison Leonhard (“Edie”) of Wells, Maine left this world on Wednesday, March 1, 2017, after a lengthy and courageous battle with breast cancer. She was born in Philadelphia, PA on January 23, 1941 to Elizabeth (Brous) and Arthur Lennox Morrison. She resided with her family in Northeast Philadelphia and later moved to Yardley, PA, where she graduated from Pennsbury High School in 1958. Edie was active in St. Andrews Episcopal Church in Yardley where she taught Sunday School. She attended Rider College in Lawrenceville, N.J. and was a member of Sigma Iota Chi Sorority. She joined American Airlines and upon graduation from stewardess training earned the Junior Birdman Award, the top award in her training class.

In 1970 she married Albert T. Leonhard (Joe) at St. Andrew’s Church in Yardley, PA, where she lived and was active in church activities and as a den mother for her son’s Cub Scout Pack. She moved to Belmont, VT in 1978, and to Hopkinton, NH in 1983. While living in Hopkinton, Edie participated in a number of activities, including church, as a member of the Women of St. Andrew’s, was Chairman of the Hopkinton Women’s Club’s Annual Antique Show, active in Pony Club with her daughter, Erin, and a member of the Garden Club and Historical Society. In 1992 the family then moved to West Chester, PA and Edie was active in the Conestoga Garden Club and the West Chester Historical Society where she served as a docent for historical tours around town. When she moved to Wells, Maine in 2008, she participated in activities at St. Peter’s By-the-Sea Episcopal Church in Cape Neddick and was Co-President of the Women’s Guild.

Edie was a collector of antiques and, together with her husband, participated in the restoration of the historic homes in which they always lived. Her real passion, however, was her children and grand-daughter and the people with whom she came in contact. Warm, generous, and outgoing, people gravitated to her and immediately felt comfortable in her presence. She was kind, cheerful, and always took an interest in what you had to say. Edie touched many lives and everyone came away from an encounter with her feeling better for having met her; that is her true gift to everyone. She will truly be missed.

Edie is survived by her husband of forty-seven years, Joe Leonhard, sons Shawn Leonhard of Middleburg, FL, and Todd Leonhard, his wife Hilary, and grand-daughter Lilly of York Harbor, ME, and daughter Erin Leonhard, of Wells, ME. She is also survived by her sister, Patricia Morrison Dybalski of Langhorne, PA. as well as nieces, nephews and cousins. Her brother Robert Morrison of Muncy, Pennsylvania predeceased her.

A memorial service will be held at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church in Yardley, PA on Saturday May 13th at 2 p.m. as well as at St. Peter’s By-the-Sea Episcopal Church in Cape Neddick, ME on Friday June 16th at 4 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, donations in her name are appreciated and may be made to the Susan G. Komen Fund for Breast Cancer Research (www.komen.org).
